The Department of Art at New Mexico State University is seeking applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Conservation of Art & Cultural Heritage to lead a unique, practice-based conservation BFA for undergraduates as well as undergraduate minors and students in the graduate certificate for Museum Studies.
Housed within NMSU’s interdisciplinary Department of Art, the conservation BFA program collaborates with the Anthropology, History, and Chemistry departments at NMSU. The degree offers a rare chance for undergraduates to receive hands-on training and prepare for conservator technician positions and graduate school in conservation. The Department of Art is housed in the newly built Devasthali Hall (2019) and offers BA degrees in Studio Art and Art History, BFA degrees in studio art and museum conservation, an MA degree in Art History and an MFA in Studio Art. NMSU also offers a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies.
Classification Standard Duties
This position teaches a 3:3 load, oversees advanced students working with NMSU collections, and contributes to the conservation and preservation of the following materials: the NMSU Permanent Art Collection within the University Art Museum (UAM), which holds the largest collection of Mexican retablos in the United States, as well as a contemporary collection particularly rich in works on paper (photography and prints); the University Museum at Kent Hall (UM), which has a large collection of indigenous and ethnographic materials, with a special emphasis on the southern New Mexico/Northern Mexico border region; the NMSU Library Archives & Special Collections which include rare books, documents and photographic materials; and, other university collections. The new hire may initiate additional collaborations across the campus and beyond.
Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Ph.D. preferred, but a terminal degree in art conservation (which can include certificates from internationally recognized academic conservation programs) will also be considered; evidence of experience in the conservation of a multitude of materials; evidence of a high degree of proficiency in a variety of conservation treatments on a range of art and cultural heritage artifacts; a scholarly record of publishing in peer reviewed journals and/or presenting papers on professional conservation issues at conferences; well-developed communication skills; evidence of ability to work cooperatively and collegially within an interdisciplinary work environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated relationships with museums, archeological collections, and archives, etc.; oversight of interns and internships; teaching beyond the graduate assistantship is preferred, however recent graduates with professional conservation experience will be considered.
